This will be the final assignment of the semester. As a reward for their hard work, students will have fun activities tomorrow and Friday.

Today we watched the inauguration, and it was a great experience to see so many kids engaged in politics. Because of the schedule, we had only 25 minutes per class, so we did a little getting ready for the district tests which will happen tomorrow and Thursday.
Of course, I try to keep partisan politics out of the classroom, but I think it is worth mentioning how incredibly lucky we are that our country can have a peaceful, orderly transfer of power. In many if not most places around the world, when one leader is replaced with another there are usually a large number of people killed in the process. We just changed the most powerful position in the most powerful country in the world in a safe and sane way. Regardless of who you voted for, we can all be thankful for that.

Today we took advantage of the mini-computer lab attached to the new classroom. First we reviewed the instructions for the oral presentation and the grader. Then students took turns going into the room to complete their research, and spent the rest of the period writing the script for their presentation.
Tomorrow and Friday we will have the presentations. I will call on students randomly beginning first thing tomorrow, and if a student is not ready, their presentation will be marked late (10 points off).

Today the students received the instruction sheet for the Extreme Earth presentation (which is included below) and we chose topics. For homework today students should research their topic; so if you chose they flattest place on earth, you would go online or to a library and find out where that place is.
Presentations will be given on Thursday and Friday.
The Extreme Earth
Oral Presentation
Put your research skills to work on an oral presentation. You will pick a category, and then do research to find out where on Earth is the most extreme in that category. the hottest place on Earth.
You will write a script, which you will hand in when you give your presentation. The script counts for ten points. It does not have to be typed.
After doing your research you will write and deliver an oral presentation to the class. Your presentation will cover four main areas:
1) Define your category.
For example, if it’s the hottest place on earth, how is it measured—hottest single day ever, hottest average temperature, etc.
2) Define the most extreme place in your category.
Is it a city, state, country, mountain, how big, what shape, who lives there, history, etc.
3) Explain why this place is the most extreme.
What makes it the hottest place on earth—wind patterns, elevation, dryness, etc.
4) Name and Evaluate the sources you used.
What books and/or websites gave you the answer. How reliable are they?
Note: you must have two different sources to get an A.
Your presentation will last for 2 minutes—no more, no less.

Happy New Year and welcome back to our students. As of today we are in a new classroom, E125. The primary reason for the move was so that Journalism, which I also teach, could take advantage of a mini computer lab we set up in a room that adjoins E125. But all of my classes will benefit from the new room, which is much bigger than my old room and a much better fit for my typically large classes.
Today we introduced the Extreme Earth project, which is an oral presentation. Each student will get a category, for example "hot." This student will then research the hottest place on Earth, and present a 2-minute oral presentation about it. This is the last project in our Research unit.
To help the students get up to speed I gave a sample presentation about The Deadliest Lake in the World. Lake Nyos, in Cameroon, killed 1,700 people in a single day. Ask your kids how.
